“Environmentally friendly”, “sustainable”, “climate neutral” – since 27 September 2026, such claims are no longer permitted without evidence. Through the Third Act amending the German Unfair Competition Act (UWG), the EU Directive on empowering consumers for the green transition (EmpCo) now applies in Germany, without a transition period.
For companies, this means every environmental claim on packaging, websites or in advertising must be specific and substantiated. With Verified Claims by EcoControl, we now offer independent verification under ISO/IEC 17029.
How it works: you submit your claim via our online form, we review the claim and your evidence, and once verified you receive the confirmed wording, a claim ID and a QR code. The programme is open to all companies and complements our NATRUE, NCS and NCP certifications by covering what appears next to the label on the packaging.
